fade to black

its the weekend. its cold outside, even though its sunny. i’m trying really hard to relax. i feel like i should be reading, writing, there are piles of books and papers to get through, ideas i want to turn into something before i somehow run out of time (i really dont know where this sense of urgency is coming from – i guess its just from not having the permanent job still). but i have a big job to do tomorrow, and i need to rest.

im nervous about taking my first class in this new subject – new for me, new for me as a co-ordinator instead of just a tutor, new for me with postgrad mature age students, new for me running a whole day workshop. i’m worried i wont get through all the material, or i’ll forget what i wanted to say, or i wont be able to control a room full of 60 people. im worried they’ll catch me out somehow, see through me, recognise i dont know what i’m doing. of course, i do know what im doing. i just need to tell myself that!

so i’m trying to ignore the piles of papers and books and just chill out for the weekend. yesterday there were a few errands to run, including a walk up on the mountain with the dogs

walk

it was blowing a cold wind and the trees were groaning and creaking and the leaves whirled around us as we walked.

this is the only spot on the way back down that you can stop for a photo and its not the best view of our lovely town (complete with steel works)

but i really love going up there. on the way down, i did the grocery shopping where i struggled to think of anything i wanted to eat other than oranges

the rest of the day was spent knitting and watching friday night lights. i’ve started again at season one. i love this show so much. you dont have to be into football to get something out of it. its a really well written, fantastically acted biting comment on small town america and the role of sport in class and race politics. it breaks my heart a little every time i watch it. some of it makes me really sad, which is probably not a great idea. but it is a good accompaniment to the knitting. i’m working on something i dont really have to look at, which is good because its black.

blacker than black even. its the wollmeise DK from germany, and the pattern is one i’ve made before, the greenfield cardigan.

notes

rosered is making one too, also in wollmeise DK but in a gorgeous green. i cant wear green (thankfully) so im calling mine ‘black is the new green’. i wear black nearly everyday, so a good plain cardigan goes a long way, and i know this pattern works. the only trouble with the previous one is the yarn i used. gorgeous berocco ultra alpaca light that i got from looped in washington DC back in 2010. (love that store). its beautiful and soft and warm and im wearing it right now. the thing is its pilled like nothing else.

fuzzy

so i cant wear it outside the house. i dont think the DK is going to pill. also, im knitting it in stocking stitch, so its making a lovely smooth fabric

i love making top down raglans, they grow quickly, are easy to add mods to and they can be tried on as you go so they always fit.

relaxing knitting, in other words, which i think is perfect for right now. so im just going to go back to it, and watch a few more football games, and maybe have a nap
